Social Studies 39 questions

Civics and government (about half the test), U.S. history, economics and geography, with questions built on short passages, founding documents and data described in words.

About the GED exam

Who takes the GED test?

Adults and older teens who did not finish high school and want a high school equivalency credential. Passing all four subjects earns the credential, which most employers and colleges accept in place of a diploma. The minimum age, cost and other rules vary by state, so check your state's rules on GED.com.

How is the GED test structured?

There are four separate tests: Mathematical Reasoning (115 minutes), Reasoning Through Language Arts (150 minutes, including a 45-minute essay), Social Studies (70 minutes) and Science (90 minutes). They are taken on a computer and use multiple-choice and other question types, such as drag-and-drop, drop-down and fill-in-the-blank. Our practice tests use multiple-choice questions only, so practice the essay separately.

What score do I need to pass?

Each subject is scored from 100 to 200, and you need at least 145 on every subject to pass. A score of 165 to 174 is GED College Ready, and 175 to 200 is GED College Ready + Credit, which could qualify you for up to 10 college credit hours. GED Testing Service doesn't publish how many questions you need right, so our practice tests use 65% correct as a benchmark.

Can I use a calculator and formula sheet?

On the Math test you get a math formula sheet, and an on-screen TI-30XS calculator is available for most questions. The Social Studies and Science tests also have the on-screen calculator. At a test center you may bring your own TI-30XS; online testers use only the on-screen one.

Can I take the GED test online?

In many states, yes. The online test is taken at home with a live remote proctor watching by webcam. To schedule it, you must first score in the green "likely to pass" range on the official GED Ready practice test for that subject within the last 60 days. Check GED.com to see whether your state offers online testing.

Is this the official GED test?

No. This is practice material to help you prepare, and our questions are original, not real test questions. The GED test is given by GED Testing Service at test centers and online. This site is not affiliated with GED Testing Service or the American Council on Education.
